Recycling in Hackney - an overview

Recycling collections from home

Hackney collects recycleables from your home on a weekly basis. Residents are given a green box for recycling glass, paper, tins and cans, card, plastic bottles, household batteries, clothes, shoes textiles, aluminium foil and engine oil.

If you live in a flat on an estate or a high rise property Hackney also provide you with recycling services.

  • Where there is enough space estates will have two large bins for cans, glass, plastic bottles and cardboard. There will also be another bin collecting paper only.

  • Where space is limited one recycling bin will be placed for mixed materials, colleting: paper, cans, plastic bottles, cardboard and glass.

Please note it is compulsory to recycle tins and cans, glass, and paper.

Kitchen food waste collections

Hackney now offer a kitchen waste collection service to all its street level properties. Hackney provide residents with two blue bins, one small bin for the kitchen to collect your food scraps on a daily basis and one larger bin to keep outside to transfer your scraps for collection. Please ensure your kitchen bin is ready for collection by 7.30am on your collection day.

You can put the following into your bin:

  • Fruit

  • Raw vegetables

  • Cooked vegetables

  • Cooked meat and fish

  • Bread and pasta

  • Tea bags

  • Egg shells

Please DO NOT put these items in your bin:

  • Raw meat and fish

  • Plastic bags

  • Bones

  • Tins and cans

  • Glass

  • Paper

Green garden waste collections

If you cannot compost at home Hackney offer a green waste collection service to around 15000 properties within the borough. They provide a large brown garden waste bin or compostable brown sacks. Please place your garden waste into open sacks and leave by the edge of your property on your allocated collection day. This service is free by appointment only. All green waste collected is composted.

You can put the following into your bin or sack:

  • Grass

  • Leaves

  • Branches

  • Hedge clippings

  • Plants

  • Flowers

Please DO NOT put these items into your bin or sack:

  • Soil

  • Plastic bags

  • Stone and rubble

  • Logs and branches more than 8cm (3 inches) in diameter

  • Paper

  • Food waste

  • Glass

  • Cardboard

  • DIY wood

  • Cans

  • Nappies

  • Pet waste

Local street recycling banks

Hackney also have a number of street recycling banks for cans, glass, paper and plastic bottles. Some also take shoes and textiles and tetra packs. To find out where you nearest street recycling bank is and what you can recycle there please visit: Hackney street recycling banks.

Special collections

If you have a piece of furniture, a fridge, cooker or similar item which is still in good condition check out the Reuse page to see if someone else can give it a home. Alternatively the Council can collect it for you. They will collect up to five items for free, up to four times a year. For more information or to book a collection:

Reuse and Recycling Centre
