Recycling in Kensington and Chelsea - an overview

Recycling collections from home

Kensington & Chelsea collects recyclables from your home on a twice weekly basis for all residents who put their rubbish into a standard rubbish bin or orange sack, which the council will provide. You can recycle paper, glass bottles and jars, cans, plastic bottles and food and drink cartons.

Some residents living in flats who do not use bags or standard rubbish bins can use the large blue bin recycling service, for all your recyclables which is provided by the council. These are provided next to the shared waste bins. To find out what services are available to you:

Kitchen waste collection service

Kensington and Chelsea do not currently provide a kitchen waste collections service. Please contact them directly for further information on when this service might be available.

Green garden waste collections

If you cannot compost at home Kensington offer a green garden waste collection service to all its residents. The council provide residents with one free, re-useable bag for your garden waste and will collect these once every two weeks.

You can put the following into your sack:

  • Leaves

  • Grass Cuttings

  • Weeds and old garden or house plants

  • Flowers

  • Twigs and hedge trimmings

Please DO NOT put these items in your sack:

  • Plant pots/wire/seed trays

  • Plastic, glass or metal

  • Gravel, stones or soil

  • Logs and branches thicker than 2.5 inches (6cm) in diameter

  • Meat waste, bones, fish or cooked food

  • Vegetable and peelings

Local street recycling banks

Kensington also have 26 mini-recycling centres located around the borough. You can recycle textiles, shoes, books and toner cartridges at these sites. To find out where your nearest street recycling bank is and what you can recycle there please visit: Kensington street recycling banks.

Special collections

If you have a piece of furniture, a fridge, cooker or similar item which is still in good condition check out the Reuse page to see if someone else can give it a home. Alternatively the Council can collect it for you. There is a charge for collecting these items. However fridges and freezers are collected free of charge for recycling and the harmful chemicals (CFCs) are extracted. For more information on charges or to book a collection:

Reuse and Recycling Centre

The reuse and recycling centre at Cremorne Wharf in Kensington and Chelsea is now closed. However residents can use the following sites in Wandsworth.
