Recycle for London

Recycling in Merton - an overview

Recycling collections from home

Merton collects recycling from your home on a weekly basis on the same day as your normal refuse collection. Merton provides residents with green and/or purple boxes for recycling paper, card, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, cans and food and drink cartons. You can now put any material in any container and they will be all collected together and then sorted into specific materials to be sent for reprocessing.

Blocks of flats with ten or more flats have been provided with a set of communal recycling bins where can place all your recycling paper, card, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, cans and food and drink cartons. All bins are emptied weekly

If you live in a flat above a shop or your property has no outside space Merton will provide you with Purple bags for all your recycling and Blue bags for your rubbish. Please check Merton’s website to find out if you are on this scheme.

Green garden waste collections

All Merton residents have access to a free green garden waste collection service. Your green garden waste must be put into special clear sacks. Merton provide residents with two free reusable clear sacks (more can be purchased for £1 each) from libraries throughout the borough and you can recycle up to five sacks at a time. Book a collection either by calling Merton’s Waste Helpline or online through Merton’s website. Place your garden waste into the sacks and leave by the edge of your property by 6am on your allocated collection day. All green waste collected is composted.

You can put the following into your sack:

  • grass cuttings

  • hedge prunings

  • twigs

Please DO NOT put these items in your sack:
