Recycling in Newham - an overview

Recycling collections from home

Newham collects recyclables from your home on a weekly basis on the same day as your normal refuse collection. Newham provide residents with an orange bag – (smaller ones available for those in flats with chutes or communal recycling bins) and you can recycle paper, card, cans and plastic bottles. You can get more orange bags from your local library or service centre or if you have a disability and cannot collect them yourself you can get them sent to you home.

Kitchen food waste collections

Lambeth do not currently offer a kitchen waste collection service to all its residents. Please contact them directly for further information on when this service might become available.

Green garden waste collections

All Newham residents have access to a free green garden waste collection service. Just put your green garden waste into black bags and leave by the edge of your property. To have your green waste collected you must book an appointment. All green waste collected is composted.

You can put the following into your sack:

  • Grass cuttings

  • Leaves

  • Prunings

  • Trimmings

  • Small branches

  • Flowers

  • Bark

  • Twigs

  • Weeds

  • Wood shavings

  • Straw

  • Or just about any ‘green’ garden waste

Please DO NOT put these items in your sack:

  • Food waste

  • Large tree branches or timber

  • Soil

  • Bricks or rubble

  • Plastic plant pots or bags

  • All other waste

Local street recycling banks

Special collections

If you have a piece of furniture, a fridge, cooker or similar item which is still in good condition check out the Reuse page to see if someone else can give it a home. Alternatively the Council can collect it for you. Newham will collect up to 6 bulky items free of charge as long as these are in your front garden or bin area. This service is by appointment only.
