Recycling in Southwark - an overview

Recycling collections from home

Southwark collects recyclables from your home on a weekly basis. Residents are provided with a blue bag to recycle paper and cardboard and a blue box to recycle your glass bottles, jars, cans, plastic bottles, plastic food trays, margarine tubs and yoghurt pots. Please keep your glass separate from your cans and plastics. Your recycling will be collected on the same day each week.

If you live on in a flat on an estate you may still be able to recycle. Residents who are covered by this service are provided with clear bags for recycling recycle paper, card, cardboard, cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars. These are than collected from residents doorsteps every week and replaced with a new clear bag for the week ahead.

If you live in a flat on a private estate or in a private apartment block you may have communal recycling facilities on site for use by all residents. For more details:

Kitchen food waste collections

Southwark do not currently offer a kitchen waste collection service to its residents. Please contact them directly for further information on when this service might become available.

Green garden waste collections

If you live in a street level property Southwark will collect your green garden waste once every 2 weeks, on the same day as your other recycling. On collection day, leave your garden waste out in a visible spot at the edge of your property by 6am. You need to put your garden waste in single use paper bags, reusable bags or a brown wheeled bin.

You can put the following into your sack:

  • grass cuttings

  • garden weeds, plants, flowers

  • leaves, trimmings and prunings

  • fruit fall

  • twigs and small branches, less than 10 cm / 4 inches thick.

Please DO NOT put these items in your sack:

  • cardboard

  • kitchen waste

  • soil

  • stones

  • bricks

  • large tree branches

  • garden furniture or fencing

Some estates have a garden waste collection service, using green reusable bags or single use brown paper bags. This collection occurs every Friday and includes the following estates:

  • Rouel Road

  • Acorn

  • Clifton

  • Consort

  • Atwell Road

  • Scovell

  • Salisbury

Local street recycling banks

Southwark have over 500 street recycling banks located at convenient street side points, others are in supermarket car parks or on housing estates. At nearly all sites you can recycle paper, card, cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, plastic food trays, margarine tubs and yoghurt pots. Some also recycle textiles and shoes. Special collections

If you have a piece of furniture, a fridge, cooker or similar item which is still in good condition check out the Reuse page to see if someone else can give it a home. Alternatively the Council can collect it for you. Each resident is allowed one collection per month with up to 15 items, by appointment only. For more information or to book a collection:
